MR. BLUE SKY

1983 – THE START

Thursday, the 24th of February, 1983. Mr. Blue Sky was first registered in The Netherlands. Before this time, it started it’s life in Mexico where it was built originally. Shortly after, it was shipped to either Rotterdam or somewhere in Germany by a ship like the one displayed in the picture. Then it was transported to the country it’s currently still in; The Netherlands!

1988 – FIRST OWNER WITH THE BEETLE

This picture was taken around 1986, when the first owner of the car owned it. You can see it started out as a white, typical 1983 Beetle with the usual headlights, wheels and bumpers.

1998 – FULL BODY-OFF RESTAURATION

Around 1998, the previous owner started restauration on the Beetle. I recieved a ton of pictures from this process. It’s really cool to see. The Beetle recieved lots of new parts, a new dark blue metallic BMW paint, new wheels and everything, but it kept the original engine.

2020 – SEEING THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME

This garage in Hilversum is where the Beetle spent most of its time for the past years. Usually under a cover. This day was my first time seeing the car, two weeks prior to taking delivery.

2020 – CLEANING OUT THE GARAGE

After seeing the car, we began cleaning out our garage at home. It took so much time and took a lot of energy and people, but we somehow managed to do it.

The garage was absolutely filled, left to right and top to bottom. So much stuff we threw away, sold or stored in our newly-made storage above where the Beetle would be parked. The result was all worth it.

2020 – DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS (ALMOST)

On 12-12-2020 (a very nice date), I purchased my first car; this Volkswagen 1200 Beetle! I was only seventeen at the time and to this date, it’s still my only car. The day we picked it up (the 12th of December) I had never driven a Beetle – or any old car – before. We drove in the dark, 50 kilometers while it was raining. Not my best experience driving the Beetle but it sure was an experience to never forget – taking your new and first car home!

2020 – GETTING FUEL FOR THE FIRST TIME

After driving from Hilversum to my hometown Edam, the Beetle was almost out of fuel. So, at our local gas station, we fueled her up for the first time. You can see how dark it was at this point and the amount of rain we’ve had on our trip.

2020 – ARRIVING AT HOME

When I got home, my family was there waiting for me. As you can see it was very late and therefore, I was very tired. They had put up a colorful flag line which I had to cut as a “first opening of the garage” for the Beetle. It was really nice and everyone was very happy for me. As said before, I hadn’t had my license for too long and it was only my first time driving a classic car so when driving it into the garage I almost took off the radiator. It was okay tho, I eventually drove it in there.

2020 – FIRST DRIVE FROM HOME

My first drive from home was on a foggy morning. My dad and I went out to the fields and took some photos and went for a little drive. At this time I was still only seventeen, which in The Netherlands means you need an adult from 28+ and a couple years of driving experience to drive with you, until you turn eighteen. This was kind of annoying, as I just wanted to go out and drive haha.

2021 – NEW RADIO

In this year I upgraded the Beetle with a new bluetooth radio. As the car was already widened, lowered, repainted, had a new interior and exhaust and was equipped with a newer radio, there was no point in trying to keep it original – it’s far from that (sorry original Beetle enthousiasts). The old radio could only play CD’s as the Beetle has had his antenna removed. I wanted to play my music and got a Pioneer SPH20-DAB.

Unfortunately, the shop wired it incorrectly. I turned on my blinker and the radio turned off. Back to the shop. I picked it up again, tested everything and it seemed okay. Until I beeped at a family member I saw walking. Yeah, back to the shop. Third time’s the charm, right? Well yes, it was finally wired correctly and after a tiring process, it was done.

2021 – FINALLY DRIVING ON MY OWN

On 26 May 2021 I turned eighteen, which meant that I could finally drive alone! I didn’t care about being allowed to buy alcohol or sigarettes or being an “adult”. This is what mattered to me. So, I went for a drive. Actually, it was quite lonely the first time. No one to ask my directions to, to ask where we could go, to tell about other oldtimers I saw parked or driving. But also, it felt very peaceful and free. Ever since then I love driving on my own, especially on sunny summer evenings like in the photo!

2021 – OLD VS NEW

Through Instagram I met the owner of this new Beetle, aswell as many other Volkswagen Beetle or Bus owners. I quickly created a community, also of people near me. I did a little photoshoot with this new Beetle. I never really liked the new ones, but this example looked very nice. It was cool to see all the differences.

2021 – MR. BLUE SKY IN BETWEEN HEATHER

This year I went on a very nice drive. I left very early in the morning, as I wanted to drive to the heather on a sunny, foggy morning. And after two failed attempts where it was suddenly raining, this day was okay. I left around 6.30AM and drove all the way to around Hilversum, where I got the Beetle. This day was very great and I still look back on it often.

2021 – NEW CHROME VENTS

The second “mod” I did, after the radio, was replacing the old black vents with a chrome pair – or actually a plastic pair with a chrome-look. The black ones almost fell out and were very faded. These look really nice on the car. I had also repaired the fake leather on my chairs earlier in the year.

2021 – NEW / OLDER / OLDEST

This summer I had a very fun photoshoot with two other local Beetles. A very new one, an older one and mine, the oldest. It is also ranked from biggest – smallest and from oldest owner – youngest owner. That’s quite cool! This was at the NDSM with another photographer.

2021 – SCHOOL PROJECTS

Ofcourse, being the photography student I am, I had to use my car as a model in some school projects. And sometimes I was even the model, in my car. This is now quite a while ago, at the NDSM with some friends. Fun memories though!

2022 – BIG PHOTOSHOOT

Summer of 2022 I did an overall photoshoot of the Beetle. I photographed the full in and outside from all angles. I just wanted to have a nice overview of the car and some good photos. I’ll probably do it again some time soon with the new upgrades the car’s had ever since

In May of 2023, after wanting to do so for quite a while, I got Mr. Blue Sky a friend! This is my 1996 Volkswagen Golf 3 Cabrio Rolling Stones Edition – quite the name! I’m still enjoying my Beetle a lot, but the Golf will be the daily driver. I’ve since gotten it polished, put the correct stickers on the car, serviced it and just enjoyed it so much!
